Audience: Casual

There’s something to be said for one of the best movies of all time, and Casablanca‘s screenplay says it best with these very well-known quotes:

  • Here’s looking at you, kid.
  • Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
  • Play it, Sam. Play ‘As Time Goes By.’
  • Round up the usual suspects.
  • We’ll always have Paris.

Casablanca‘s screenplay is completely honest in its approach, yet it still continues to surprise many.  Is love kept pure from  the corruption of power and money?  Will a man’s future prevail against his past?  I just love how each scene is so carefully crafted to induce a laugh, a raised eyebrow, a nodding of the head, and even a lone tear.  The script is a masterpiece of juggling the audience’s emotions from beginning to end.  It’s hard to imagine whether another Casablanca will ever appear, but I see bits and pieces everywhere—imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so to speak.

It makes me feel good inside to write my first full review on a Humphrey Bogart movie.  I’m not sure if it’s his best appearance, but his Rick is a man of ideals, constantly fighting to find one to live by.  It’s a timeless struggle that everyone faces, and his moxie is put to the test against the gestapo, local police, love interest, and even a contemporary role model.  I can only speak for myself, but I truly appreciate the dynamic nature of all of the characters in Casablanca.  Whatever role you play in life, you can fit right into the hustle and bustle of leaving, staying, or just arriving in Casablanca.

Feel-Good Romance

I honestly feel like romance has been lost in time to a past generation, but admittedly, I’m biased. Casablanca walks a fine line between romanticized characters in unbelievable situations and genuine feelings undergoing realistic stages of change.  At the end of Casablanca, I can’t help but feel satisfied that there’s a resolution to the complex nature of love, despite shifting back and forth between the black and white intentions of all the characters.  I’m probably at heart a sentimentalist.

Honorable Mention: Setting/Set/Costumes

Recommendation: A movie that everyone should watch!

I decided to embark on this journey of documenting my passions with one of my favorite movies Casablanca.  Even as I wrote a casual review, I feel like it’s but a minutiae of thoughts running rampant in my mind.  The only thing I can say is to watch, re-watch, and keep watching this movie until it becomes a part of you.  Out of all of the classic movies in all the world, you should watch this one =).
